Behind the Aisle: Building a Dream Wedding Business with Kerensa Weddings

Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting times in a couple's life, but as anyone who has ever braved a seating chart knows, it can also be remarkably overwhelming. To pull back the curtain on what it really takes to bring a dream wedding vision to life, I sat down with Jordan, the founder and heart behind Kerensa Weddings, for a conversation in our Behind the Aisle series. From how her personal wedding journey sparked a full-time passion to navigating the hustle of the local wedding industry, Jordan offered a genuinely honest look into her world, sharing invaluable insights for aspiring planners and couples alike.

What’s in a Name? The Story Behind KerensaWeddings

Jordan’s journey to Cornwall began during her university days, when she relocated from the city and fell in love with the region. Though she isn't originally Cornish, her connection to the area runs deep through her Cornish husband, and the county quickly became her permanent home.

When it came to naming her business, she wanted something deeply rooted in her local ties. She chose the name Kerensa, which translates to love or beloved in Cornish. It serves as a daily homage to both her adopted home and her family.

"It's quite close to my heart... My husband's Cornish, and Kerensa means love or beloved in Cornish."

How Kerensa Weddings Was Born

Like many of the best creative ventures, Kerensa Weddings grew organically out of personal experience. Jordan’s entry into wedding planning started when she coordinated her own wedding day. Although being the bride came with its share of stress—mostly because she opted to manage every single detail herself—she completely fell in love with the intricate logistics and organization.

Her natural talent did not go unnoticed. Respected industry peers like photographer Leo Sharp and close personal friends saw her knack for coordination and encouraged her to take the leap into professional planning. After handling her own wedding, friends, family, and eventually friends-of-friends began asking her to coordinate their special events. Supported by a background in project management, encouragement from her husband, and a essential start up laptop gifted by her parents, Jordan officially launched her freelance career.

Realities of the Freelance Hustle: Mindset, Marketing & Growth

Stepping out on your own in the wedding industry can be intimidating. Jordan candidly shared her early struggles with self-doubt, particularly when it came to competing against established planners with decades of experience. Over time, she realized that couples were looking for someone they could connect with personally, and that showcasing her authentic self was far more powerful than trying to match anyone else's footprint.

Navigating the seasonal nature of weddings also required a practical mindset. Rather than viewing the quieter off-months as a hurdle, Jordan utilizes that time to devote focused, uninterrupted attention to her clients and handle deep pre-planning. To build her presence, she continuously adapts her approach, balancing listings on platform sites like Hitched with features in regional publications like Cornwall and Devon Wedding Magazine. While she monitors shifting social media algorithms, she finds that genuine personal connections and word-of-mouth recommendations from past couples remain the true engine of her growth.

Behind the Scenes: What a Wedding Planner Really Does

A common misconception is that a wedding planner simply holds a clipboard and directs a timeline on the day of the event. In reality, a great planner acts as an advocate and structural anchor for the couple throughout the entire journey.

"Wedding planners, if you approach the right one, they can do so much more than just keep a timeline going... I'll talk to brides if they're getting confused, read contracts for corkage fees, move wedding cakes, and leave handwritten notes."

From a technical standpoint, Jordan carefully audits supplier contracts to catch hidden venue guidelines or unexpected corkage fees before they turn into surprises. She designs realistic schedules—such as placing speeches strategically around dinner courses so service flows smoothly without food getting cold—and serves as a calm, neutral mediator when family opinions or planning stress start to build up.

Advice for Future Wedding Planners

For those looking to step into the wedding industry, especially younger or emerging planners, Jordan offers grounded and practical guidance. She strongly advises networking and seeking out shadowing opportunities with experienced suppliers, whether by attending industry events or meeting up for a simple coffee chat to gain real-world perspective.

Focusing on the minor details makes a massive difference, as going above and beyond for guests and couples builds the kind of reputation that drives lifelong referrals. She also emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and building a personal support network. Because the job is deeply consuming—often involving late-night messages or calls during personal downtime—having a trusted circle of fellow industry professionals who understand the specific pressures of event delivery is essential for long-term mental well-being. Above all, she reminds new planners that people buy from people, so staying kind, organized, and authentic is always the best strategy.

Advice for Brides and Grooms-to-Be

When it comes to planning a wedding, Jordan encourages couples to step away from feeling forced to follow every fleeting social media trend. Instead, she loves seeing couples incorporate personal, meaningful touches that reflect their actual lives and heritage, such as featuring special family traditions or meaningful elements unique to their relationship.

She also urges couples to protect their peace throughout the process. Planning can quickly feel isolating or overwhelming, especially when managing dynamic family expectations. Bringing in a planner or dedicated coordinator for day-of management allows the couple, their wedding party, and their families to step back from the logistics and fully experience the celebration as guests.

What’s Next for Kerensa Weddings?

Looking ahead, Jordan’s long-term vision for her business is clear and ambitious. She aims to expand her capacity to handle forty to fifty weddings a year, build out a small team, and launch creative styled shoots during the quieter winter seasons. She is also has a long time goal of opening her own office day.

Whether it involves sharing a collaborative creative studio complete with a dedicated podcast space or expanding her reach across the region, Jordan's passion for making wedding dreams seamless and stress-free continues to push Kerensa Weddings forward.
